It has come to my attention that there are two new American pastimes:
- People who are convinced that they KNOW everything. And as a result of their surety of the “Right Way”, you are stupid, misinformed and possibly on drugs or abusing alcohol.
- As a result of people who “know everything and are sure they are right”, they believe it is their DUTY to tell strangers what to do. After all, because they are so inherently intelligent, educated or just gifted with the ability to discern right from wrong and every iteration in-between, they know what will make you happy, fulfilled and set you on the path to righteousness. And you will be grateful for them in the end.
Thomas Byrne Edsall is a 74 year old American journalist, author and professor. Edsall was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, attended Brown University and then received his B.A. from Boston University in 1966. From 2006 to 2014, Edsall served as the Joseph Pulitzer II and Edith Pulitzer Moore Professor of Public Affairs Journalism at Columbia University, where he continues to teach in an adjunct capacity. In 2011, he became a weekly opinion columnist for the New York Times.
He is accomplished, there are certainly those who are more accomplished. . He is one of the recent authors who have contributed to the Republican’s war on their own voters. So, the opinion piece he wrote for the New York Times entitled “Who Are the Angriest Republicans?” begins with the following statement “Conservatives who once derided upscale liberals as latte-sipping losers now burst with contempt for the lower-income followers of Donald J. Trump.”
I believe that Mr. Edsall is probably a liberal but this little piece of work that he wrote is just an extension of things written by “Conservative Republicans” at the National Review who don’t need people to read their magazine or blog anymore. The National Review seems to have decided that (a) they do not need or want Trump supporters to read their magazine and (b) if you are part of that “lower income group” who support Trump or his ilk, you should cancel your subscription immediately and (c) if you don’t cancel immediately we will make you feel like “crap” with our assumptions about you until you cry “uncle” and leave for good. Besides, you are all using OXY anyways so you don’t belong in our club.
In his piece he cites Kevin Williamson, a columnist for National Review, initiated the most recent escalation of this particular Republican-against-Republican power struggle. In a March 13 essay, “The Father-Führer,” he states” If you spend time in hardscrabble, white upstate New York, or eastern Kentucky, or my own native West Texas, and you take an honest look at the welfare dependency, the drug and alcohol addiction, the family anarchy—which is to say, the whelping of human children with all the respect and wisdom of a stray dog—you will come to an awful realization. … The truth about these dysfunctional, downscale communities is that they deserve to die.”
So, Kevin Williamson, in his haughty, self important view believes that if you are poor, white and living outside the mainline mecca’s of the sophisticated urban areas, you possess the “wisdom of a stray dog”, you are dependent on drugs and alcohol, and as such you and your community deserve to die. David French, his fellow colleague at the National Review, is also pretty bitter about his experiences growing up in rural Kentucky where he is disdainful of those who beat their wives and snort Oxycontin with gleeful abandon. Mind you I don’t agree with either activities but I believe that they have other pastimes in rural Kentucky.
You get where I am going, liberals and those who consider themselves the “intellectual elites” are sitting around patting themselves on the back in a massive “circle jerk” – they are the smart ones and the drug addled , wife beating, OXY snorting poor white trash they escaped from by attending a good university and moving to the city , do NOT have the right to choose ANYTHING , MUCH LESS, the person that will be the President of THEIR United States, or the nominee of THEIR Republican Party.
As a Black woman, it is easy for me to imagine that they “think” though not use, many other euphemisms for others that they don’t consider “their equals”, but they understand that it would be politically incorrect to use those “words” to describe Blacks they don’t consider their equal, Hispanics they don’t consider their equal, or so on and so forth.
The bottom line here is that “YOU are stupid”, they are smart and that is why THEY (the smart ones) should choose.
On the next level are those who are considered “stupid”. They , in turn, turn their ire on each other. The Cruz people are convinced that Ted Cruz is a Constitutional Conservative “anointed and HOLY water Baptized” to lead the world out of their sinfulness or lack of Constitutional knowledge to a righteous future. And by golly, if you can’t see that “YOU ARE STUPID”.
The “Trumpsters” are a mixed bunch, they look at Ted Cruz and feel that where there is smoke there is fire – something is “off”, they are wondering why is it that some of them have advanced degrees, great businesses, don’t beat their wives and have never snorted OXY but are still “STUPID” because they support Trump. They wonder if they are hallucinating that they are Black, female, Hispanic or “mis-remembering” that they grew up in New York instead of Appalachia. After all that is what the “smart guys” from National Review have been trying to tell them……. I guess it is the cloud of the OXY, moonshine, and wife beating that makes you unable to see the light – THEIR light.
The 20 or so people supporting Kasich think the other two voter categories are “stupid” as well.
So, what is the point here, the point is that these “intelligentsia” believe can see life better than you, and feel justified in not only insulting you but telling you what to do, what to think and how to vote. They can tell you what your lying eyes tell you about a film, dammit, did not happen the way YOUR lying eyes saw it. You were unable to see the subtleties of “reporter abuse” and the abuser should be fired and jailed immediately!!!!
They say they love the Republican rules for delegates, but gleefully announce that they can “change” the rules if they feel like it.
They tell you that you can’t drink big mugs of soda, eat the salted foods, speak candidly, or elect through a popular vote because doing it your way is not valid because you are “stupid”.
