It is baffling! We can not understand why these kids seemingly with everything at their fingertips would rush off to the desert to join an Islamic group or just become “inspired” on their home turf……..! This is the “crew” that the US President called the JV team…… they are decimated! What gives?
Before authorities arrested him at O’Hare International Airport and accused him of attempting to provide aid to ISIS, a teen from the Chicago suburbs left behind a letter for his parents.
Mohammed Hamzah Khan, 19, wrote that he was leaving the United States and on the way to join ISIS, according to a criminal complaint. He invited his family to join him in the three-page letter, which authorities found in the bedroom he shared with a sibling in Bolingbrook, Illinois. But he warned them not to tell anyone about his travel plans, the complaint said.
Now he’s charged with one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. The charge he faces carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/06/us/teen-isis-support-arrest/index.html
A 19-year-old Mississippi student who is accused of attempting to travel to Syria to join ISIS is a smart and “kind, bubbly person,” according to a college friend. Jaelyn Delshaun Young of Starkville, Mississippi, and her companion, 22-year-old Muhammad Oda Dakhlalla, planned for months to travel to Turkey in order to slip into Syria and join ISIS, according to the FBI. They were caught after allegedly engaging in online conversations with undercover FBI agents posing as terrorist sympathizers.

Here are some possible reasons:
- They (the young people) want to be involved in something bigger than themselves. Patriotism has been denigrated in our society. It is the fashion both in government and the private sector to sneer at America. History is no longer taught in a manner that encourages pride. I have watched Christopher Columbus go from being a “hero” to not only a “zero” but a rapist as well. The Confederate flag as well as the artifacts of that era is not looked upon as simple artifacts of the era. We have to go back and make judgments on events long ago and far away in terms of today’s values. Therefore we have no respect for our own foundations.
- They (the young people) want to be a part of a success. In Western society “everyone is a winner”. Everyone “participates” so winning is flattened out to the least common denominator. The “joy of accomplishment and success” is gone. You show up, you get points; You pay your fee, you get at least a “B”; Everyone gets a trophy, no matter how hard you work; Nothing matters much, nothing is ‘exceptional”, all in the name of “inclusion”. “They tend to be more inclusive, better organized and better financed than their more moderate counterparts,” he said. “They also tend to be more assertive and have more of an impact on the battlefield, and so enjoy greater local standing, which makes them still more attractive to foreign fighters looking to make their own impact.” http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/07/world/isis-western-draw/
- The appeal to a sense of “religiosity”. I remember that I caught the “Sunday School Bus” every Sunday morning because missing the bus was a real big loser. You had to sit in your room, in quiet, making notes on one scripture or another until EVERYONE returned on the “Sunday School Bus”. This was how I memorized several looong Psalms. In my home your offering came from your own money and you got involved in the Youth groups because that was the sure way you got to leave the house…… otherwise it was a roll of the dice, and the whim of Dad or Mom whether or not you could go anywhere. I might add that at the last moment they could also change their minds…… You know, you are all dressed and moving quickly to the door when the clarion call of “mind changing” came out…… “Where do you think you are going?” …. That would never happen if you were going to the Protestant Youth Meeting or the Catholic Youth Meeting. But I remember that my friends said they would never “force” religion onto their children…… this was a disaster in 4 out of the 6 people that I know of. Religiosity is the recognition of something “greater” than yourself. It draws you together with others and binds you with an “obligation” of sorts to be better, to look for something higher. It compels people to recognize that they do not act in a social vacuum, and that what they think, feel, and do is powerfully shaped by the broader historical circumstances in which they are compelled to live and act. Moreover, Westernized jihadists, as a recent report cogently suggested, assuredly are alienated and feel that they do not belong in a secular world that often mocks and challenges their religion.
It has nothing to do with “climate change” – either hot or cold; It has nothing to do with being able to open small businesses or obtaining small business loans as asserted by a woman in the Obama administration. There is, of course, nothing new about young idealistic people being been drawn to exciting international causes. During the Spanish Civil War, over 2,000 volunteers left Britain to join International Brigades fighting on the side of the republican government, joined by thousands of others from across Europe. The rejection of Western consumer society and values is common in universities. It has happened with every generation, but this generation was brought up by parents who are still rebelling and therefore never gave their children anything to fall back on. That along with the constant coddling …. well you can answer the rest of this yourself.
