“Tyshawn was shot several times in the upper body, including in the head and back, in an alleyway in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood this past Monday around 4:15 p.m., police said. The nine-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
A nearby resident told ABC station WLS in Chicago that he was watching TV when he heard at least five shots. When he ran out to see what was happening, he found Tyshawn lying on the ground with his basketball next to him. Family members told the station that Lee brought that basketball everywhere he went.
“Tyshawn Lee was murdered in probably the most abhorrent, cowardly, unfathomable crime that I’ve witnessed in 35 years of policing,” Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthysaid at a news conference on Thursday. “We believe that Tyshawn was targeted, lured to this spot and murdered, and we believe that this is the most recent in a series of gang-related violent events that may go back as far as August, may go back a little further than that.”
McCarthy added that police “believe Tyshawn’s father has ties to a gang that is in conflict with another gang.” Read more at: http://abcnews.go.com/US/murder-year-chicago-boy-killed-alleged-gang-related/story?id=35020452
Tyshawn’s father does not want to cooperate with the police. No one had been arrested or charged in connection to Tyshawn’s death as of Friday morning. Since a “person of interest” was released from police custody Thursday, there have been no updates from police in the search for the boy’s killer.
Tyshawn Lee’s mother, in the meantime started a Go FundMe page and raised 17 thousand dollars. This money was for funeral expenses BUT apparently Karla Lee purchased a 2015 Chrysler 200, with the funds because she said he (Tyshawn) would have wanted her “to be safe”. Big-hearted friends and strangers had donated more than $17,000 to a GoFundMe page headlined “Help me lay my baby to rest.”
Not to be outdone:
Tyshawn’s father appeared to have started another GoFundMe page seeking donations for funeral expenses over the weekend. But the page — which was also controversially selling memorial t-shirts — was quickly taken down after a deluge of comments criticizing the move.
In all honesty, I don’t expect that anyone will pay for Tyshawn’s murder or many of the other murders that go on in Chicago everyday. I have volunteered with children for a number of years and I am convinced that there are few “problem children” and a plethora of “problem parents”. Tyshawn was targeted for execution, possibly because of his family’s gang ties, Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said last week. He was killed near his grandmother’s home in Auburn Gresham on the 8000 block of South Damen Avenue last Monday after being lured into an alley from a nearby park by his killers.
As people gather to wonder “what can we do as a community?” I suggest that someone put it into the parent’s head that they need to attain a modicum of “self-responsibility” for the death of their child. The more we assume the “village” concept, the worse the environment for these children become. These parents are responsible for the fate of their child, the nonsense of “blaming society” or “DA Man” is enabling the carnage in our society to continue. No one made “Pops “stay in a gang instead of raising his son and no one should have paid for ‘Momma’s” car.
As Karla Lee justified her purchase: “If a m—–f—– telling you they gonna try to take your life, too, because of whatever the f— is going on … they already took my son. I walk to work, I get on the bus. I’m not trying to be a target for nobody.”
