President Obama announced a series of executive actions on Monday regarding essential reforms of our criminal justice system. But before you make up your mind…… let’s take a look at one case:
Catherine Jones and Curtis Fairchild Jones were once the youngest convicted murderers in the nation, were released from a Florida prison more than 15 years after he gunned down his father’s girlfriend this past summer. If you look at the picture of these beautiful children you would never believe the terrible abuse and problems that they went through nor the trials and tribulations that they had to endure during their incarceration.
The “incident” occurred after father Curtis Jones, 38, left his home north of Cocoa on Wednesday night to take care of a minor car repair and drop in on a friend.
While Sonya Speights (the father’s girlfriend), 29, sat at a dining-room table working a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle, Cathy fired her father’s 9mm handgun into the woman’s upper body. She dropped the weapon after the first discharge, but Curtis picked it up and emptied the magazine into the woman.
Less than four months before 13-year-old Catherine Jones and her 12-year-old brother, Curtis, shot and killed their father’s girlfriend in 1999, child welfare investigators found signs that they were being sexually abused by a family member. A few years earlier, the state looked into claims that the same family member had molested them. That family member, convicted in 1993 of sexually assaulting his girlfriend’s daughter, lived in the house in Port St. John with the children and even shared a room with the boy. The pedophile family member even shared a bed with Curtis. Florida Today is not identifying the family member because he was never charged in this case.
“He would make me perform oral sex to the point where we would throw up.” the children stated.
A third investigation occurred in 1996 when Curtis had a bruised and swollen eye.
It was initially believed that they killed her over jealousy of their father’s love, it was later revealed that the siblings planned to kill their father and a male relative living with them in their Port St John, Florida, home, whom they claimed was sexually abusing them. Everyone the children turned to urged them to call police. But they fled and hid, cowering beneath blankets in an overgrown, vacant lot near their home.
At the time Police, attorneys and newspapers reported the children killed the girlfriend, because they were jealous of attention their father was giving her. However, documents, from DCF and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, depict a family mired in violence.
Their parents, Stacie Parks and Curtis Jones had a volatile relationship that ended in marriage despite the fact that Jones beat the mother, Stacie Parks, to a bloody pulp early in the relationship. Just a few months after their nuptials she left him for good, leaving behind 4-year-old Catherine and 3-year-old Curtis. The children’s mother met the father when she was a young teenager at the local Kentucky Fried Chicken joint . He was already an adult male in his 20’s. Stacie Lee Fairchild, the children’s mother, married Curtis Jones on May 9, 1989. She was 22 and he was 28. They already had started their family. Cathy was born in 1985 and Curtis in 1986. Parks said in one attack, which happened when she was pregnant with Catherine, Curtis Jones Sr hit her so hard her uterus tore, leading to Catherine’s premature birth.
Their mother, Stacie Parks, said she fled the home because of domestic violence in 1989, when Catherine and Curtis were 4 and 3 and about 10 years before the killing. Parks said her husband made it clear she couldn’t leave with the children. The truth is that Stacie — who is white — fled for life and left her children behind after years of domestic abuse. Their father wouldn’t let the children go and the mother’s family did not want them because they were black.
Soon after their mother left a family member came to their home, this person that hasn’t been named, once spent six years in prison in Alabama for strong-arm robbery — settled in Titusville. In 1993, the family member was arrested and later convicted of having sex with a 14-year-old girl.
There was one incident that finally propelled the children to act. Days after the Department of Children and Families closed their final investigation into sexual abuse against the Jones children, Catherine was in the shower when the male relative burst into the bathroom, ripped open the shower curtain and stared at her.
“He started masturbating while I was in the corner crying,” Catherine said.
When he was done, the relative left 50 cents on top of the toilet seat
The rest is history.
The siblings, now aged 29 and 30, became the youngest children in the country’s history to be tried as adults for first-degree murder.
They pleaded to second-degree murder and were sentenced to 18 years in prison followed by a lifetime of probation, Florida Today reported.
Curtis, who has not spoken publicly about his release, will leave prison in two weeks as an ordained minster and will be able to live on his own for the first time.
He had a brief taste of freedom in 2004 when he and several other kids ran from a juvenile detention center after Hurricane Frances knocked down the facility’s fence. He was caught 24 hours later and 318 days were added to his sentence.
His sister Catherine, who found love and marriage via a pen pal while incarcerated, is expected to be released sometime in July.
Because they will be on probation for life, any violation of the conditions they agree to could sent them back to prison.
Each sibling’s conditions include: paying $50 per month toward the cost of supervision after the first 18 months of release, not using intoxicants in excess, consulting probation officers before moving and other agreements.
