It is not going to be a walk in the park for Donald Trump but Hillary is losing. Watching her on television this hour, I saw a woman trying to keep up, trying to appear presidential, trying to…….. do or be what might not be within her ability or grasp.
Appearing tremendously tired and haggard in a lilac pantsuit, I watched her extoll “A President Donald Trump would undermine the U.S.’s leadership as an “exceptional” nation to veterans. This speech was given in advance of Trump’s plans to give a long-awaited speech in Arizona on his immigration stances and during his surprise visit to meet with the president of Mexico. Make no mistake, the invitation was from one “world leader” to what is perceived as another “possible world leader”. The campaign’s decision to travel to a Mexico poses security risks for a candidate who has stoked tensions with his rhetoric on Mexican immigrants — without reporters following close behind marks an unprecedented moment in the coverage of major party presidential nominees. Even a picture of Trump and Peña Nieto together could go some way to enhancing the Republican nominee’s stature as a potential global leader among some voters — perhaps among the very swing state Republican moderates he desperately needs to court to cut his poll deficit to Clinton.
Further, as Clinton said: “my opponent is wrong when he says that America is no longer great,” Clinton said, echoing the feelings of many devotees of American exceptionalism. They advocate for more engagement of the U.S. internationally to spread democratic ideals, while Trump has often taken a more isolationist approach. Clinton says Trump would undermine America’s greatness, and she would maintain it.
But to U.S. Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Troy, Clinton’s work as secretary of state doesn’t back her pledge.
“We witnessed Hillary’s foreign policy prowess during her time as Secretary of State and it was an absolute disaster,” Davidson, an Army veteran, said in a statement the Trump campaign distributed ahead of Clinton’s speech. “The Obama-Clinton strategy of ‘leading from behind’ set the table for ISIS to grow. She routinely compromised classified information on her private e-mail servers, and it appears she traded access to the State Department for donations to the Clinton Foundation. For Americans who are concerned about national security and the treatment of our veterans, Donald Trump is our only choice for President.”
Trump took to Twitter on Tuesday night to say he looks “very much forward” to meeting with the Mexican leader. Pena Nieto’s office confirmed the meeting with its own tweet, saying the two men would meet privately. Clinton’s campaign has urged voters to not “be fooled” by what it calls Trump’s attempts to disguise his immigration policies.
