This is perhaps the biggest problem for the coronation of “Madame President” Hillary Clinton.
Yesterday, HillaryClinton spent the day stumping on the campaign trail with three of her former Senate colleagues: Minnesota’s Amy Klobuchar, Michigan’s Debbie Stabenow and Jeanne Shaheen from New Hampshire. They referred to themselves as the “sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits.”
Then at some point, the Clinton joined by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI),Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), as well as New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan. onstage for a “dance-off” to the tune of “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten.
It was not pretty nor especially inspiring to watch those women in polyester pantsuits “shake their bootays”. At worse it looked like “party time” at Shady Pines Rest Home, or at best a local production of the “Golden Girls” onstage.
Whatever this comedy debacle was, the word “inspiring” would have nothing to do with it. Clinton, who is trailing Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire in some polls by as much as 29 points in some polls, is hoping that the women of New Hampshire might help close the race for her. In 2008, Clinton won the primary on the strength of female voters, who swung for her 46% to Barack Obama’s 34%.
I don’t know Mrs. Clinton, it is now 8 years later and you appear to be 20 years out of style. “Big sis” Clinton with a “Girl Power” playlist of songs at the ready — isn’t resonating with young women who are turning instead to a socialist by the name of Bernie Sanders…. in large numbers. And he doesn’t dance.
It is interesting that these ladies of power are more clueless than past generations about the inner workings of the minds of young people, especially young women. I remember my grandmother and I wound sit and talk for hours …. she got it. Some of these women are “grandmotherly” by virtue of age but have foregone the process which would have made them wiser. Talking to young women.
Last night I watched Bill Maher who had Gloria Steinem as his featured guest in the beginning interview. Gloria Steinem recently opened up about an illegal abortion she had as a young woman. In the belief that abortion somehow levels the field for equality and empowerment of women, she then went on to show that she had no clue why young women were voting for Sanders. instead of Clinton, She suggested that they “just wanted to be where the boys were”.
Amazingly ignorant and telling that this ancient feminist still believes that young women are similar to the young guys and gals in “Beach Blanket Bingo” complete with Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon.
Let’s just put it this way, they (young women) would rather vote for Bernie Sanders because they HAVE TIME and other issues they feel are more important than just voting for a woman….. any woman or maybe just Clinton. The goals at the twilight years, with eyes jaded with some disappointment and frustration …. shows on the grim faces of some of these women in Clinton’s audience and have nothing to do with the dewy, fresh, hopeful faces of today’s young women. Most of these younger women grew up with working mothers, some mothers were heads of the family, professions and industry. Many of their mothers and grandmothers were quite powerful. In fact, the frustrated housewives of Betty Friedan’s book “The Feminine Mystique” depicted their GRANDMOTHER or even GREAT-GRANDMOTHER.
Also it is important to remember that when Clinton states that she wants “you” to see the “first female president in your lifetime” she is talking about HER lifetime. The average 18 – 45 year old, barring sickness or untimely death, has a lot more “time” to elect a BETTER candidate than the “flawed” Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
So surprisingly, there is a “gender gap” for Hillary Clinton, and it is apart from the obvious problem that she is going to have garnering the “male” vote —- of any race, color or creed. Her gender approach, which I am sure the playbook told her would work as remarkably well as the “race approach” years ago with Obama when he received almost 100 percent of the Black vote, just is not working. Blacks share a common bond. Women are as diverse as the blades of grass and leaves on trees because even though on the surface they might appear the same….. they are all quite different.
And…. in a time when “Rejecting her is a way of rejecting the establishment”, this race will be the Republican’s to lose……. that is unless they put forward an even more flawed candidate—- which is still possible, in fact…. very possible.
