Born Bernard Sanders on September 8, 1941, Bernie Sanders or now just “Bernie” is popular…. to say the least. He is an Independent but caucuses with the Democrats. He is Jewish but admittedly “non-religious”. His father was a Jewish immigrant from Poland whose family was killed in the Holocaust. It can be said that many of your early experiences will shape the manner in which you approach life and your world view. His father, Eli, was a struggling paint salesman and his mother who was born to Jewish parents in New York dreamed of living in a “private home”. She had to settle for a three and a half room apartment off of Kings Highway. She died at the age of 46 when Bernie was 19. It is from these humble beginnings that he told a New York Times reporter . “Sensitivity to class was embedded in me then quite deeply.”
Bernie stays away from the “corny” personal stories that often turn out to be lies by politicians hoping to evoke an emotional response. He has never discussed his first marriage nor the fact that his only natural-born child was with a second woman. – not the first wife as is told by biographers and other articles online. He also has 3 children with his current wife. Although they are his step-children, he does not differentiate. That is admirable.
He graduated from the University of Chicago after spending a year at Brooklyn College. Politics came to dominate Sanders’s life. He was an early member of Vermont’s Liberty Union party, an offshoot of the antiwar movement in Vermont. He ran as the party’s nominee for the Senate in a special election in 1971 and finished with 2 percent of the vote. The following year, he ran for governor and received 1 percent. He would run two more times for statewide office that decade as a third-party candidate and never come close.http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/21/magazine/21Sanders.t.html?pagewanted=all
Asked why he became interested in politics he said “I’m not particularly religious.’ As a child, Sanders said, being Jewish taught him ‘in a very deep way what politics is about. A guy named Adolf Hitler won an election in 1932,’ the senator said. ‘He won an election, and 50 million people died as a result of that election in World War II, including 6 million Jews. So what I learned as a little kid is that politics is, in fact, very important.'”
A self-described democratic socialist, Sanders favors policies similar to those of social democratic parties in Europe — especially those of social democratic parties in Europe particualrly those instituted by the Nordic countries. In other words (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, andSweden).
We will get back to that.
So what is a democratic socialism? Democratic socialism is a political ideology advocating a democratic political system alongside a socialist economic system, involving a combination of political democracy (usually multi-party democracy) with social ownership of the means of production. The use of “Democratic” before the word “socialism” is a means of distinguishing it from the pure socialism such as the “Marxist-Leninist” brand of socialism that is “non-democratic”.
Make no mistake here, Democratic socialism sees capitalism as inherently incompatible with the democratic values of freedom, equality and solidarity. They seek to transform a capitalist system by transforming the concept of property ownership with some type of social ownership that will eradicate forms of “inequality”. In short having a socialist economy in which the means of production are socially and collectively owned or controlled alongside a politically democratic system of government. Some tendencies of democratic socialism advocate for revolution in order to transition to socialism.
The Democratic Socialists of America defines democratic socialism as a movement to eliminate capitalism by evolving a “social order based on popular control of resources and production. Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is a democratic-socialist and social-democraticorganization in the United States and a member of the Socialist International. Founded in 1982 the Democratic Socialists of America has an executive director by the name of Maria Svart. The student wing of this group is the “Young Democratic Socialists”. The party has at times endorsed electoral candidates, notably including Walter Mondale, Jesse Jackson,Ralph Nader (informally), John Kerry, Bernie Sanders and Barack Obama.
So, it is now US Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), and self described democratic socialist, continues to rise in the polls.
A new CNN/ORC poll released Monday showed Sanders with the biggest leap among any candidate in the 2016 field. And a new poll in the first-in-the-nation primary state of New Hampshire found him slightly expanding his lead there over former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Sanders loyalists insist that he is the party purist and true progressive in the race. Now back to the Nordic countries, Bernie stated in the debates that we should be something like Denmark. Hmmmm…… there tends to be a love affair among progressives about the utopia that they believe Scandinavian countries have achieved. Having traveled there extensively and lived in Europe for some time….. I will tell you that this utopia does not exist. Don’t get me wrong it is beautiful, it is clean and my family will always remember our time there last summer BUT…. very few people looked like the West Family….. there. It is largely a homogeneous culture — although with refugees coming in everyday they will experience some ruffling of their orderly society. They also put up with taxation we would not like, secularism we would not like, rules and regulations we would not like and a whole host of other things…… we would not like.
America is …. complicated, it is….. unique, and it has a way of life that …… deserves to be protected.
