Today, in 1910, Alice Stebbins Wells is admitted to the Los Angeles Police Force as the first woman police officer to receive an appointment based on a civil service exam.
Alice Stebbins Wells (June 13, 1873—August 17, 1957) was the first ever female officer in Los Angeles. Previously a minister in Kansas, Wells joined the Los Angeles Police Department after petitioning the mayor, police commissioner and the Los Angeles city council in order to better aid other women and children who were victims of crime. Wells went on to become the founder and first president of the International Association of Police Women, and traveled America and Canada to promote female officers. Having been sworn in on September 12, 1910, Wells eventually retired in 1940.

There was a time in which the policeman was looked upon with respect and admiration. And there have been instances in which rogue cops have behaved reprehensibly, however, I am inclined to believe that more often than not the average law officer will behave in a manner more altruistic than the general population, it is for this reason that I am highlighting Alice Stebbins Wells.
How different the situation is today. In the past week, we have witnessed at least four members of law enforcement killed by people who decided to prey upon them. This past weekend a deputy in Texas by the name of Darren Goforth was assassinated while pumping gas into his patrol car. the perpetrator made sure that after the office was down, he emptied his gun of the remaining bullets in the chamber. No one knows why he did it as he is claiming mental illness in one way or another. His mother, who originally was reported to have turned him in, is now claiming that “her baby” was shopping with her. It is quite interesting how late shopping malls stay open these days. But it is unlikely that she is telling the truth….
So, with this incident and the burgeoning “Black Lives Matter” lying idiocy taking hold around the country led by people who are not only confused anarchists, but also overwhelmingly white young people who overlook the fact that Black people are the predominant killers of Black people and far more Black people commit crimes against White people each year…..
Where did this start? The old saying that the “fish rots from the head down” will apply here. On July 16, 2009, Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. was arrested at his Cambridge, Massachusetts home by a local police officer responding to a 9-1-1 caller’s report of men breaking and entering the residence. The arrest occurred just after Gates returned home to Cambridge after a trip to China. Lucia Whalen was the neighbor who saw two men trying to enter a house without using keys and called the Cambridge police for assistance. It is now clear to all that her intent was to protect the homeowner and the neighborhood regardless of race. She did not recognize Mr. Gates. Further investigation shows that Whalen did not know the race or the identity of the two men trying to get into the house. She was solely concerned about protection.
From another officers report……..
On July 16, 2009 at approximately 12:44 PM, I Officer Figuaroa #509 responded to an ECC broadcast for a possible break at __ Ware St. When I arrived, I stepped into the residence and Sgt. Crowley had already entered and was speaking to a black male.
As I stepped in, I heard Sgt. Crowley ask for the gentleman’s information which he stated “NO I WILL NOT!” The gentleman was shouting out to the Sgt. that the Sgt. was a racist and yelled that “THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS TO BLACK MEN IN America!” As the Sgt. was trying to calm the gentleman, the gentleman shouted “You don’t know who your messing with!”
I stepped out to the gather the information from the reporting person, WHALEN, LUCIA. Ms. Whalen stated to me that she saw a man wedging hi shoulder into the front door as to pry the door open. As I returned to the residence, a group of onlookers were now on scene. The Sgt., along with the gentleman, were now on the porch of __ Ware Street and again he was shouting, now to the onlookers (about seven), “THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS TO BLACK MEN IN AMERICA!” The gentleman refused to listen to as to why the Cambridge Police were there. While on the porch, the gentleman refused to be cooperative and continued shouting that the Sgt. is racist police officer.

No good deed goes unpunished as Lucia Whalen found out. Whalen herself became halting, tearful, angry, and mortified when interviewed regarding the situation. She was aghast at being accused of racism for calling 911 after she saw two men entering Gates’ home. She received ugly calls threats and the like….. and then the President of the United States of America waded into the controversy:
On July 22, President Barack Obama said about the incident, “I don’t know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played in that. But I think it’s fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home, and, number three, what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there’s a long history in this country of African Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately.” Law enforcement organizations and members objected to Obama’s comments and criticized his handling of the issue. In the aftermath, Obama stated that he regretted his comments and hoped that the situation could become a “teachable moment“.
On July 24, Obama invited both parties to the White House to discuss the issue over beer, and on July 30, Obama and Vice President Joe Biden joined Crowley and Gates in a private, cordial meeting in a courtyard near the White House Rose Garden; this became known colloquially as the “Beer Summit”.
Apparently, Gates claims that he and the arresting officer Crowley are now friends and he even claims that they took DNA samples and found out they were cousins. The Cambridge police commissioner, Robert C. Haas, described the department as “deeply pained” by Obama’s criticism and said Crowley had followed proper protocol in making the arrest.
What followed over the next few years, were the Trayvon Martin killing in which Obama claimed that if he had a son, he would “look like Trayvon”, then the glorification of a street thug by the name of Michael Brown who received as close to a state funeral as is possible in Fergusson complete with rap stars and White House representation along with visitation and investigation by the US Attorney General. We then had the assignation of two policemen sitting in their car by someone inspired by whatever victimization narrative that leads to this new “anti-cop” sentiment.
And today we have the beginning of the “monkey” trial led by an ambitious young prosecutor who promised to “get justice” for the troubled, young man who died in police custody. Touting what seemed to be esteem-able characteristics within her family such as “my family represents generations of law enforcement” . She did not mention, however, that all but one fired for one thing or another but mostly for drug dealing. The pillage and plunder of Baltimore will erupt, however, if “true justice” instead of “mob lynching” prevails.
